a speciality of our local expert jewellers at metal urges in hobart, australia is mokume-gane. mokume gane recieves its name from the wood grain pattern that was created in the forging of swords and edged weapons in japan between the 17th and 19th century. its distinctive layered pattern is made through the heavy compression of mixed metals, fused in interleaved layers. we only use quality 18ct yellow gold, 18ct white gold, 18ct rose gold and silver in a mokume gane jewellery piece. the patterns on each unique piece are hand carved- therefore no two pieces are ever the same. most of the mokume gane we create is made into wedding bands for both the bride and the groom, unique engagement rings, heirloom rings, and pendants.
