Toughening creates balanced internal stresses which cause the glass, when broken, to crumble into small granular chunks instead of splintering into jagged shards. The granular chunks are less likely to cause injury.
A polished edge reffers to an edge that has been either flat polished (common on square panels) or round and polished (common on cirlces and ovals) a polished edge is reccomended for most applications.
