Granite

Granite needs to be protected. This means the application of a sealer is needed to prevent staining and for maintaining the granites appearance. Although granite is a tough stone its still recommend that, if used as kitchen bench tops, a chopping board be used (not that cutting on granite will damage it, but it will blunt your knives) also hot cooking implements should not be placed directly from stove or oven onto bench tops as this may cause thermal shock and crack the stone.

Travertine Tile

As with Marble, Travertine is soft and porous. It has a sponge like look and heavily pitted surface, which needs filling with putty like substance to make it smooth. Even after this process, it still has fine pinprick like holes over the surface.

There are coatings available that completely cover the surface, however it tends to yellow after awhile and is costly. It is rarely used for bench tops.
