mix 10% (100kgt) of the concentrate with grain and 5 - 15% roughage.

directions for use

vvrs lampak liquid supplement should be mixed at 5% (50kg per tonne) with grain, roughage and lime to form a balanced lamb feedlot mix.

protein meals may need to be included when the protein level of the grain is low. Additional salt and ammonium chloride may also be added, in order to lower the risk of urinary calculi (water belly) in the lambs.

roughage should be supplied either in the feedlot mix or separately ad-lib. Including the roughage in the mix has an advantage as it provides greater control of the roughage intake.

ensure that there is ample access to clean water.

when grain feeding lambs, the intake of high grain feeds should be gradually introduced to allow the rumen to adapt, to prevent gorging and acidosis. molasses is a by-product of the sugar cane industry. Blackstrap molasses or final molasses is the by-product from which the maximum amount of sugar has been extracted. Blackstrap molasses is usually diluted with water to a standard brix of 79.5 degrees.the brix value indicates the specific gravity of the molasses in degrees. At 79.5 degrees brix molasses weighs 1.39 kg per litre.



the undiluted blackstrap molasses is usually between 79 and 85 degrees brix.nutritionally, molasses is used as an energy source. Its protein level is low. Molasses is a useful ingredient for improving the palatability of the diet, reducing the dustiness and serving as a binder. It also has a laxative effect.



directions for use

molasses has been successfully used in diets for young and old pigs and poultry. High levels of inclusion in layer diets have been shown to cause an increase in the incidence of wet droppings with a subsequent decrease in feed efficiency. This is due to its high mineral content (mainly potassium).

similarly, molasses will cause diarrhoea in pigs or calves if fed at high levels.

canola meal, or rapeseed meal, is a by-product of the oil extraction of canola. The meal is produced by the solvent extraction process along with the oil. The processing method will influence the nutrient availability, the anti-nutritional factors (toxins) and thus the nutritive value of the meal. Solvent extracted canola meal is processed at lower temperatures to produce a high quality meal with low levels of the anti-nutritional factors.canola meal can also be produced by the less common techniques of cold pressing and expeller extraction. There are some differences in the processes, which affect the nutritive value of the resulting meal. Cold pressed meal may contain higher levels of toxins, which will limit its inclusion into feeds.the following information is in regard to solvent extracted meal:

solvent extracted canola meal can be included in the diets of pigs, poultry, cattle, sheep and horses as part of a balanced diet.

due to the risk of harmful anti-nutritional factors, it is important to check on the processing method of the meal.

higher levels of inclusion in pig feeds, up to 20% have been associated in some cases with off-flavours in the pig carcass. Higher levels of inclusion in layer hen feeds has been associated with fishy taint in eggs.

recommendations of up to 5 percent have been suggested for the inclusion of canola meal in the diets for breeding animals.



deleterious substances

the problems associated with the feeding of canola meal to pigs and poultry are due to the presence of a number of potentially toxic substances: erucic acid, glucosinolates, sinapine and tannins.due the risk of anti-nutritional factors, it is preferred to use canola meal that has been produced by solvent extraction or expeller pressed processes.provided canola meal has been properly processed the presence of glucosinolates is no longer a major limiting factor. However the level of tannins, about 3% in canola meal, may reduce the digestibility of dietary protein. Sinapine, which is found in canola meal at a level of 1.0% to 1.25%, may reduce the palatability of rations and result in off-flavoured eggs.

peanut meal is a by-product from the pressing of peanuts for oil extraction.nutritionally peanut meal is deficient in the sulphur amino acids and lysine. The quality is influenced by the quantity of hulls in the meal and extent of heating during the processing.

peanut meal can be included in diets for pigs, poultry, cattle, sheep and horses of all ages.

the level of inclusion in diets for finisher pigs should be limited since residual oil in the meal may cause soft fat in the pig carcass. A maximum limit of 10% is recommended for inclusion in finisher pig diets.



deleterious substances

peanuts that have been allowed to become mouldy may contain toxic substances. The fungus aspergillus flavus produces the mycotoxin, aflatoxin. Peanut meal derived from contaminated or mouldy peanuts may contain the toxin and therefore should not, under any circumstances be fed to pigs, poultry or horses.

aflatoxin in feed for pigs, poultry, cattle and horses causes loss of appetite, reduced growth rate and fertility. Aflatoxin can be transmitted from the animal into milk and other products.ref: (evans. M, 1985)
